Lorem Ipsum Generator

Placeholder text is the design industry's standard trick for a common problem: the layout is ready, the copy is not. Instead of waiting for final text β€” or worse, judging a layout filled with "test test 123" β€” designers fill blocks with text that looks like real prose but means nothing. The English-speaking world uses Lorem Ipsum, a scrambled passage derived from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC), typeset and mangled by a 16th-century printer and used as dummy copy ever since. This tool generates it on demand: paragraph mode assembles 4–7 random classic sentences, sentence mode draws individual sentences, and word mode shuffles the corpus into random words, re-capitalized and punctuated so the output still reads like an English paragraph at a glance. A Chinese dummy-text mode is included too, drawing from classical Chinese sentences for projects that need authentic CJK glyph density. Everything is composed locally in your browser β€” nothing is uploaded.

The most common use case is layout proofing. When mocking up a poster, a newsletter, a slide deck, or a web prototype, placeholder text lets you judge typography, spacing, and information density without being distracted by draft copy. It is also far more professional in client demos: a CMS, dashboard, or email template filled with realistic dummy text immediately communicates real information density, while "asdf asdf" makes the whole demo look unfinished. One caution from experience: if your layout breaks when real copy replaces the placeholder, the placeholder was probably a poor stand-in for the real text's length β€” match the volume, not just the vibe.

Developers use this tool to test text-handling logic: multi-line truncation with ellipsis, search-term highlighting, character counters and maxlength enforcement, and list pages with wildly varying title lengths all need controllable volumes of text. The unit selector matters here: generate by paragraph for realistic blocks, by sentence for list items, by word count for stress-testing truncation, and by character count when you need an approximate fixed length. Chinese projects specifically need Chinese dummy text β€” Latin characters and CJK glyphs have completely different widths and line-breaking rules, so testing a Chinese layout with English filler produces misleading conclusions.

Content teams and editors use it for template try-outs: testing a newsletter layout before the articles are written, filling both variants of an A/B test with equal-length control copy, or producing sample text for typesetting tutorials. Results can be copied straight into your design tool or downloaded as a .txt file for reuse.

A few caveats worth knowing. First, none of the output has real meaning β€” Chinese dummy text is randomly concatenated classical sentences, and word mode is a random word shuffle β€” so never publish it as actual content; both readers and search engines will notice. Second, character-count mode accumulates whole sentences, so the result rounds up to (never below) your target number; trim the tail manually if you need an exact count. Third, the count caps at 200 units per generation β€” generate twice and merge for larger volumes. Finally, results live only in the current page and are cleared on refresh, so copy or download anything you want to keep. Generation is fully offline-capable: the page makes no network requests at all.

How to use

  1. Pick a text type: Chinese dummy text, or English Lorem Ipsum
  2. Choose a unit (paragraphs / sentences / characters / words) and enter the count
  3. Click Generate β€” copy the result or download it as a .txt file

FAQ

Does the generated text mean anything?

No, and that is the point. English output is assembled from the classic Lorem Ipsum corpus β€” scrambled Latin that has been meaningless since the 1500s β€” and Chinese output is randomly concatenated classical sentences. Placeholder text is designed to look like prose without inviting anyone to read it, so you can judge layout without content bias. Never publish it as real copy.

Why does word mode read so badly?

Word mode shuffles the corpus into individual words and reassembles them at random, then capitalizes the first word and adds a period. It preserves word shapes and punctuation so the block looks like an English paragraph, but there is no grammar or semantics. Use sentence or paragraph mode if you need coherent-looking sentences β€” those draw complete classic Lorem Ipsum sentences.

Why is character-count mode longer than the number I entered?

To avoid breaking sentences mid-way, character mode accumulates whole sentences until the total reaches or exceeds your target. The result therefore rounds up to your number, never below it. If you need an exact character count, generate slightly over and trim the end manually.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. All generation happens locally in your browser with zero network requests β€” you can verify by disconnecting and reloading the page. Results exist only in the current page's memory and are cleared on refresh, so copy or download anything you want to keep.

Can I generate very large volumes, like 50,000 words?

Each generation caps at 200 units (paragraphs, sentences, or words). For very large volumes, generate a few batches and merge them, or use paragraph mode at the cap β€” a single run already produces several thousand words. If you regularly need bulk dummy text, the .txt download makes batching painless.
